The Red Bull Formula One team has signed renowned designer Adrian Newey to join the Aston Martin Racing Team. This is a major coup for Canadian tycoon Lawrence Stroll who wants to win the world championships.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the British aerodynamics specialist’s salary will exceed £20mn per year. He will be a shareholder and manager technical partner in the Aston Martin race team.
Newey will make more money than most drivers on the grid. This shows that F1 is an extremely technical sport, where the driver’s skill is just as important as the expertise of the mechanic.
Red Bull announced Newey’s departure earlier this year. It is a major blow for the team. The 65-year old had been working with the reigning champions of the world since 2006. Newey played a crucial role in the creation of cars that led to the team winning seven F1 constructor’s and drivers’ championships.
Red Bull is embroiled in controversy after a female team employee accused Christian Horner, the team’s boss, of inappropriate behavior. Horner denied these allegations, and Red Bull cleared Horner after a barrister led investigation.
Aston Martin has a place of fifth in the standings for the championship this year, behind Mercedes. Stroll believes Newey can help Aston Martin in F1. The team finished seventh last year, and fifth in 2022.
A championship-winning Aston Martin team would help boost Aston Martin’s profile within a sport which has seen a surge in popularity since Liberty Media acquired it. F1’s status as a platform for luxury car sellers has been reinforced by the Netflix series Drive to Surviveand new races in Jeddah and Miami, as well as the addition of Las Vegas.

Stroll brought Aston Martin back to F1 in 2021 for the first time since more than 60 Years. The team has made major investments in infrastructure and facilities to give them the foundations they need to win titles.
Newey, the former Mercedes engine chief Andy Cowell’s successor as CEO of the Aston Martin F1 Group, is the latest high profile figure to join Aston Martin F1 Group.
Newey will have to solve new airflow puzzles as F1 introduces new cars that are lighter in 2026. Aerodynamic rules will also be changed.
Stroll stated that “Adrian was the best at his job in the entire world — he’s at the top of the game.”
Newey stated that Stroll’s dedication was evident in the new “state-of-the-art” technology campus at Silverstone and the wind tunnel.
Newey said, “With great partners like Honda or Aramco they have all of the infrastructure pieces needed to make Aston Martin an international championship-winning team. I look forward to helping them achieve this goal.”
The F1 team is led by Fernando Alonso and Stroll’s Lance, both double world champions.
