Italian luxury carmaker Lamborghini has announced a delay in launching its first all-electric model until 2029, citing the luxury automotive sector’s unreadiness for full electrification. The VW-owned manufacturer, celebrating its 60th year, had initially targeted 2028 for its electric debut but has reassessed its timeline amidst regulatory uncertainty and underwhelming demand.
Chief Executive Stephan Winkelmann defended the decision during a briefing at the company’s Bologna headquarters, stating that 2029 represents an appropriate timeline for market conditions. The move reflects broader industry concerns about electric vehicle adoption rates, particularly within premium market segments.
The manufacturer’s current strategy centres on hybridisation, with a complete three-model hybrid range including the upgraded Urus SE SUV, Revuelto supercar, and the recently unveiled Temerario sports car, commanding prices from £250,000 before taxation. Winkelmann emphasised the company’s commitment to hybrid technology as a stepping stone towards complete electrification.
Synthetic fuels remain a key interest for Lamborghini, potentially extending the lifespan of combustion engines while meeting stringent emissions standards. This approach aligns with sister company Porsche’s technological development strategy within the Volkswagen Group.
The decision mirrors similar cautious approaches from competitors, with Ferrari planning its electric debut in early 2025 while maintaining focus on traditional and hybrid powertrains. Aston Martin has likewise adjusted its electrification timeline, prioritising plug-in hybrid development.
Despite potential challenges, including threatened import tariffs from the US, Winkelmann reaffirmed Lamborghini’s commitment to Italian production, emphasising that manufacturing would remain at their Sant’Agata Bolognese headquarters, preserving the brand’s cultural heritage and craftsmanship traditions.
