Pizza Express Reveals Bold US Expansion Plans With First Florida Restaurant

British dining heavyweight Pizza Express has unveiled its ambitious entry into the American market, announcing plans to establish its inaugural US restaurant in Florida. The strategic move marks a crucial stepping stone in the company’s global expansion strategy, targeting 1,000 restaurants worldwide by 2030.

The renowned pizza chain has partnered with Purple Square Management Company, a substantial American franchising organisation operating 245 locations across 15 states. This collaboration signals Pizza Express’s determination to penetrate one of the world’s most competitive dining markets.

Chris Holmes, chief development officer at Pizza Express, emphasised the significance of this expansion, stating their intention to “raise the bar for pizza” in the American market. The company’s current portfolio encompasses nearly 360 UK establishments and 100 international and franchise locations, with presence in Hong Kong, UAE, India, and Spain.

The organisation’s retail division maintains a robust presence in British supermarkets, with products available in 4,000 locations. Financial performance remains strong, with revenues reaching £454.6 million in 2023, marking an increase from £422.1 million in the previous year.

Since its humble beginnings in 1965, when founder Peter Boizot imported a pizza oven from Italy to London, Pizza Express has undergone several ownership transitions. The chain, currently chaired by former Asda chief Allan Leighton, has seen various stewards, including entrepreneur Luke Johnson’s successful tenure in the 1990s. The company is presently under the control of debt funds, including Cyrus Capital Partners and Bain Capital, following its previous ownership by Chinese private equity firm Hony Capital.
