Trump Threatens EU with Tariffs Unless Bloc Increases US Oil and Gas Purchases

The European Union faces mounting pressure as US president-elect Donald Trump issued a stark warning regarding trade relations between the two economic powerhouses. The crux of his message: commit to substantial purchases of American oil and gas or confront punitive tariffs.

The EU, eager to sidestep a potential trade conflict, has spent recent weeks formulating strategies to boost its acquisition of US goods, particularly liquefied natural gas (LNG) and agricultural products. Trump’s message, delivered via his Truth Social platform, emphasised the EU must address what he termed their “tremendous deficit” with the United States through large-scale energy purchases.

Brussels has already signalled openness to increasing American LNG imports, which proved crucial after Russia restricted fossil fuel supplies following its invasion of Ukraine. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen previously indicated the bloc’s willingness to substitute Russian LNG with American supplies, noting the potential cost benefits for European consumers.

The United States currently holds a dominant position in EU energy imports, providing approximately 48 per cent of the bloc’s LNG and 15 per cent of its oil imports. However, energy analysts highlight capacity constraints in US LNG production as a potential obstacle to increasing supply volumes.

The situation echoes previous trade tensions during Trump’s first presidency, when then-European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker proposed increased US gas purchases to avert trade conflicts. Should Trump proceed with his threatened 20 per cent blanket tariff on non-Chinese imports, Brussels has begun preparing potential retaliatory measures, though EU capitals remain cautious about escalating economic tensions given their reliance on US defence support.

The timing of Trump’s warning coincides with domestic challenges in Washington, as a Trump-supported debt ceiling plan failed to pass the House of Representatives, raising concerns about a potential government shutdown.
