The parent company of Google, Alphabet, has abandoned its previous commitment to avoid using artificial intelligence for weapons development and surveillance applications. This significant policy shift was announced on Tuesday, coinciding with the company’s release of lower-than-anticipated earnings figures.

The revised ethical guidelines notably exclude the previous commitment to avoid technologies that could “cause or are likely to cause overall harm”. Google’s AI chief, Demis Hassabis, justified the change by emphasising the evolving global landscape and the need for AI to support “national security”.

In a joint statement, Hassabis and James Manyika, Alphabet’s senior vice-president for technology and society, emphasised the importance of democratic nations leading AI development. Their position reflects growing concerns about global technological competition and the strategic implications of AI advancement.

The timing of this announcement is particularly notable, as it preceded Alphabet’s financial results, which revealed consolidated revenue of £77 billion, marginally missing market expectations. This shortfall triggered a 7.5% decline in the company’s share price during after-hours trading.

The move represents a dramatic departure from Google’s original “don’t be evil” motto, which was gradually phased out after 2009. Industry experts view this policy shift as a response to intensifying international competition in AI development and increasing pressure from national security considerations.

The decision has sparked debate within the tech community, with prominent figures like British computer scientist Stuart Russell warning about the implications of autonomous weapon systems. This policy change reflects broader industry trends as AI transitions from experimental technology to a fundamental component of modern infrastructure.
