Amazon Orders More Than 150 Electric Heavy Goods Vehicles To Create UKs Largest Zero Emission Fleet

In a significant move towards sustainable logistics, Amazon has placed orders for over 150 electric heavy goods vehicles, positioning itself to operate Britain’s largest zero-emission truck fleet. The online retail giant’s substantial investment includes more than 140 Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 trucks and eight Volvo FM Electric trucks, complementing its existing fleet of nine electric tractor units.

The investment, potentially reaching £30 million with individual units priced up to £200,000, marks a crucial step in Amazon’s European expansion plans. These state-of-the-art vehicles boast an impressive 310-mile range on a single charge and require approximately one hour for high-speed recharging.

This procurement forms part of Amazon’s broader £300 million investment strategy, aimed at deploying 1,500 electric trucks across its European operations by 2027. The company’s commitment aligns with its ambitious target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2040, significantly advancing the current UK landscape where only 300 electric HGVs operate.

Complementing its road transport strategy, Amazon is diversifying its delivery methods by incorporating rail freight along the west coast main line. The electrified network will facilitate deliveries between the Midlands and Scotland, integrating seamlessly with local Amazon distribution centres.

In an innovative urban delivery solution, the company is launching on-foot deliveries in central London, utilising mobile-restockable trolleys. Nicola Fyfe, head of Amazon logistics in Europe, emphasised the environmental and operational benefits, stating the initiative represents “a win for our customers, the environment and our business.”
