In a landmark acquisition, Amazon has finalised a £1 billion agreement with the Broccoli family to obtain creative control over the prestigious James Bond franchise. The deal marks a significant shift in the franchise’s leadership, moving away from its traditional British roots.

The transaction involves Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson, descendants of original producer Albert “Cubby” Broccoli, who have long served as the guardians of the 007 legacy. This agreement follows Amazon’s previous £8.5 billion acquisition of MGM Studios in 2021, which initially secured distribution rights but did not include creative control.

Industry analysts note that Amazon’s total investment in the Bond franchise now approaches £10 billion, substantially exceeding Disney’s £4 billion purchase of the Star Wars franchise from George Lucas in 2012. The deal’s magnitude reflects the streaming giant’s commitment to securing premium entertainment properties.

Former Bond actor Daniel Craig, aged 56, expressed continued support for the Broccoli family, stating his “respect, admiration and love for Barbara and Michael remain constant and undiminished.” The Ian Fleming estate has also voiced enthusiasm for Amazon’s new stewardship, expressing confidence in the franchise’s future direction.

Some industry veterans, however, have raised concerns about the franchise’s British identity. Valerie Leon, who appeared in “The Spy Who Loved Me” and “Never Say Never Again,” suggested the series might lose its distinctive British character under American corporate ownership.

The transition marks the end of an era for British cinema, with the Broccoli family’s departure potentially signalling significant changes in how future Bond films will be conceived and produced. The move highlights the growing influence of streaming platforms in reshaping traditional entertainment franchises.
