Google’s UK and Europe boss is retiring after nearly two decades in which he guided the internet giant to a $2 trillion market valuation.
Matt Brittin will depart in the New Year as the industry shifts focus to artificial-intelligence and adapts to new regulations around the world. Before taking a break, he will stay with the company to help it find a successor.
Brittin leaves the company during a critical time in its history. Sir Demis Hassabis is the head of Google’s artificial intelligence divisionDeepMind. He has recently won the Nobel Prize for chemistry. However, the company continues to be under pressure due to competition concerns. The US Department of Justice is also evaluating whether or not it should order the break-up.
Brittin didn’t comment on the DoJ specifically, but he said it was important that the industry have the right rules in place even if regulators “won’t agree on everything”.
He said: “I think it is important to have the correct guardrails, and for policymakers to be able understand technology. I thought that we in Europe have tried to be responsible and respectful in our approach.
“When I first started, it felt like we were outside the room. We were a little ‘on menu’. “I think that our role is to be seen by others as long-term, responsible partners.”
Since Brittin joined the internet giant, Google in January 2007, its market value has grown from $215 billion to over $2 trillion. Brittin was proudest of his contribution to the company’s efforts to teach digital skills in Europe to 24,000,000 people. He will continue to be involved in efforts to equip individuals to work in an age powered by new technologies, such as artificial intelligent.
