Meta releases open-source AI application ‘competitive with closed competitors’

Meta claims that its new artificial-intelligence model will be the first open source system to rival products from competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic.

In a blog post, the company stated that its new model with the unwieldy title of Llama 3.1405B “is competitive” against others, including those from OpenAI, and Anthropic, “across a variety of tasks”.

If this is true, then for the first ever, the most powerful AI model in the world would be available to anyone without an intermediary controlling its use or charging for access.

Meta stated that “Developers are able to fully customize the models according to their applications and needs, train with new datasets and do additional fine tuning.” This allows the developer community to fully understand the power of generative AI. Meta does not require developers to share data. They can customise their applications for any environment and run them in that environment.

The company claims that those who use Llama in Meta’s apps (for now only available in the US) will enjoy “extra layers of safety”.

These are also open-source and the company cannot force others to use them for their own purposes.

Mark Zuckerberg, Meta co-founder and Meta’s founder, said in a recent blog post that “I think open source is essential for a successful AI future.” “AI is more likely than any other technology to improve human productivity, quality of life, and creativity. It can also accelerate economic growth and unlock progress in medical research and science. Open source ensures that AI benefits are available to more people in more places, that power doesn’t remain concentrated with a few companies and that technology can be used more safely and evenly across society.

Zuckerberg acknowledged that “bad actors could use the intelligence of AI model to create entirely new harms”. He argued that it would be better for the world to have AI widely used so that bigger actors could check on the power of small bad actors.

Meta has so far marked its homework in relation to the power of its model. Its sheer size is comparable to the biggest systems of competitors. It is not guaranteed that Llama 3.0 405B will be as effective as the leaders in the market until third-party tests are conducted.

Only users in the US have easy access to the AI model. Meta avoided an EU launch because of concerns over the EU’s regulatory framework for AI and data privacy. In the end, it appears that Meta decided to stick with a single country during the launch period. As an open-source software, Llama 3.0 405B is likely to be available outside of the EU via other channels in the near future.
