Microsoft wants laptop users so familiar with its artificial-intelligence chatbot, that it remembers everything they do on their computer and helps them figure out what to do next.
Software giant announced an updated version of Copilot on Monday, its AI assistant. It faces increased competition from rivals who are pitching AI technology which can create documents, images, and act as a personal assistant in the workplace or at home.
Microsoft’s Build developer conference, which takes place in Seattle this year, focuses on integrating AI into Windows OS for PCs. This is a product that Microsoft has millions of users who are already interested.
Windows Recall is one of the new features. It allows AI assistants to “access virtually everything you’ve seen or done on PC in a manner that feels like having photographic memories”. Microsoft has promised to protect the privacy of users by allowing them to filter out information they do not want tracked.
Microsoft’s Copilot and Google’s AI-based large language models were built on OpenAI’s AI large language model, announced last week.
Google has rolled out an updated search engine which displays AI-generated summaries above website links on the results page. It also showed off Astra, a AI assistant that is still in development and will be able “see” things through the smartphone camera lens.
OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, unveiled last week a new version. It demonstrated an AI voice assistant that has human characteristics. The AI can talk about someone’s clothing and even try to gauge their emotions. OpenAI removed the voice Monday because it sounded too much like Scarlett Johansson’s AI character from the sci-fi film “Her”.
Microsoft invested billions of dollars in OpenAI. However, the startup has also released a desktop version ChatGPT for Apple Mac computers.
Apple’s annual developer conference is next in June. Apple CEO Tim Cook announced at the annual shareholders meeting of the company in February that Apple has made significant investments in generative AI.
Microsoft’s announcements on Monday seemed to be aimed at thwarting Apple’s plans. Microsoft Surface devices and Acer, ASUS Dell, HP Lenovo Samsung as well as Microsoft partners Acer ASUS Dell, HP Lenovo Samsung will be able to use the AI-enhanced Windows computers starting 18 June. They’ll only be available on premium models, starting at $999.
