An Amazon-owned facility in Pecos County, Texas has secured a permit permitting emissions of up to 33 million tons of CO2 annually. This approval marks a significant development as the technology giant prepares to power its new West Texas data centre with energy from a dedicated gas-burning plant.

The proposed installation involves thirty-five natural-gas turbines designed primarily to supply seven point six five gigawatts of electricity directly to the site rather than connecting initially to the state grid. According to Cleanview, which monitors such projects, this permitted emission level exceeds that allowed for even the largest coal-fired power plants currently operating in the United States.

The move reflects a broader industry trend where major technology firms including Meta and Google are constructing their own energy generation facilities using non-renewable sources like gas and coal to meet surging demand driven by artificial intelligence. This shift occurs alongside efforts from the Trump administration to relax regulatory restrictions on polluting power infrastructure.

Even if actual emissions fall below permitted limits, the project represents a potential challenge for Amazon’s Climate Pledge. Founder Jeff Bezos committed to achieving carbon neutrality across his company by 2040, yet recent years have seen rising emissions due to AI-related energy consumption. A spokeswoman stated that while global conditions differ from when the pledge was established, the commitment remains unchanged despite these operational realities.
