Apple blames EU regulations for delaying the launch of AI features in Europe.

Apple has delayed the launch of three new artificial-intelligence features in Europe due to European Union rules on competition, which require that Apple ensure rival products and services are compatible with its devices. The features are set to launch in the US in the fall, but not in Europe until 2025.

The company announced on Friday that three features, including SharePlay screen sharing enhancements and Apple intelligence, will not be available to EU users in this year due to regulatory uncertainty caused by the EU’s Digital Markets Act.

Apple has said that the EU regulations will force it to compromise on its device’s security. This is an argument they have made in the past and EU officials have rebuffed.

Apple stated in an email that it was concerned about the DMA’s interoperability requirements, which could lead to compromises in the integrity of its products that would put user privacy and data at risk.

In a recent statement to Bloomberg the European Commission stated that Apple was welcome in the EU as long as it adhered to the local laws.

Apple Intelligence was unveiled at the annual developer conference earlier this month. It is a set of artificial intelligence tools that integrates ChatGPT with Siri to search for information on the internet and create images or text.

Apple’s next mobile operating system will be released in the latter part of this year. The assistive features can also search through emails, text messages and photos on a phone to find specific information, based upon the user’s instructions.

The company announced that the features will be available for iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPad with its M1 processor and later versions. iPhone Mirroring for MacOS Sequoia lets you view and interact with the screen of your phone on Mac computers.

Apple said in a statement: “We are committed towards collaborating with European Commission to find a way to provide these features to EU customers without compromising on their safety.”

Apple has repeatedly promised that its new AI will be private. Tim Cook, Apple’s chief executive, promised in early June that the company’s features will “be grounded within your personal context, such as your routine, relationships, communications, and more”.
