Apple Faces Backlash Over AI News Summary Feature Inaccuracies

Tech giant Apple has announced plans to revise its artificial intelligence news summary feature following a series of embarrassing mishaps that generated false news alerts on its latest iPhone models.

The corporation’s AI system, deployed across iPhone 16, 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max devices since December, has drawn criticism from major news organisations, most notably the BBC, after distributing fabricated news stories under legitimate media branding.

In a particularly concerning incident, the system generated a BBC-branded alert falsely claiming Luigi Mangione, currently incarcerated and facing charges for the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, had taken his own life. The system subsequently produced additional erroneous alerts, including false claims about tennis star Rafael Nadal’s personal life and premature announcements regarding sports competition outcomes.

The BBC has issued a formal complaint, emphasising the critical importance of maintaining news accuracy and trust. “These AI summarisations by Apple do not reflect – and in some cases completely contradict – the original BBC content,” a BBC spokesperson stated.

Apple’s response indicates a software update will be released in the coming weeks to “further clarify” when displayed text represents AI-generated summaries. The company maintains these features remain in beta testing and encourages users to report concerning notifications.

This development represents a significant setback for Apple’s AI ambitions and highlights the ongoing challenges tech companies face in implementing reliable artificial intelligence systems for news curation and content summarisation.
