# Apple faces $5.7 billion award over haptic engine patents

A federal jury in San Diego has awarded Taction more than $5.7 billion in damages after finding that Apple infringed two of the company’s patents. The verdict relates to Apple’s Taptic Engine, a haptic technology used in its iPhones and Apple Watches. Taction had filed the lawsuit in 2021, alleging that Apple used its vibration-based tactile transducer technology without a proper licence.

The legal dispute centred on US Patent Nos. 10,659,885 and 10,820,117. These patents cover technology that allows users to feel a device responding to their input. The jury determined that Apple infringed two claims in one patent and one claim in the other. However, the panel did not find that Apple willfully infringed the intellectual property rights.

Taction had previously accused Apple of reverse-engineering the technology from two Kannon gaming headsets. Apple has stated that it intends to appeal the decision. The company has not provided further comment on the outcome of the trial.
