Apple is reportedly developing an artificial intelligence server that will utilise its high-performance M-series Ultra chips, a move that would mark the company’s first entry into the server market in nearly two decades. The potential product is expected to launch in 2029 and aims to capitalise on the increasing demand for Apple hardware among AI developers. This strategic shift follows the retirement of the Xserve in 2011, representing a significant return to enterprise computing infrastructure.

According to reports from The Information, the enterprise server will be available in two configurations, each equipped with either two or four of Apple’s future M8 Ultra processors. The project reportedly received backing from John Ternus, who is now Apple’s chief executive, when it commenced a year ago. At that time, Ternus was leading the company’s hardware engineering efforts. His support for the initiative underscores the internal priority placed on expanding Apple’s role in the AI infrastructure sector.

The development coincides with strong sales of the Mac mini and Mac Studio, as AI companies seek reliable hardware to run complex workloads. The Information noted that major players such as OpenAI have purchased tens of thousands of these devices to train AI agents using reinforcement learning techniques. Additionally, Anthropic has rented Mac minis through Amazon Web Services. This surge in enterprise adoption of Apple silicon has likely encouraged the company to pursue a dedicated server solution built on the same architectural foundation.

Apple is also exploring the use of Nvidia’s NVLink Fusion technology to connect the M8 chips within the server. Sources indicate that Apple and Nvidia have been in discussions regarding how Apple could leverage Nvidia’s data center networking equipment for its AI ambitions. However, The Information cautioned that the project could still be cancelled or proceed without integrating Nvidia’s technology. If realised, the server would be a notable part of Ternus’s legacy, having officially taken over from Tim Cook on September 1 after 15 years of leadership.

Despite the promising outlook, the project faces significant supply chain challenges. The ongoing global shortage of memory chips, driven by the rapid construction of AI data centers, has led to substantial price increases across the consumer electronics sector. This scarcity affects a wide range of products, including Apple’s own devices, posing a potential obstacle to the timely delivery of the new server.
