Asda Sells Leon Restaurant Chain Back to Co Founder Amid Brand Turmoil

Asda has divested high street chain Leon, returning control to its co-founder John Vincent amid mounting criticism over the brand’s recent focus on unhealthy offerings. The deal includes 46 company-owned restaurants and 25 franchise sites, marking a significant moment for a chain that has faced scrutiny for moving away from its original ethos of serving wholesome and convenient food.

John Vincent, who co-founded Leon in 2004 alongside former government adviser Henry Dimbleby, reacquires the business just four years after selling it to EG Group, owned by the billionaire Issa brothers, for approximately £100m. The Issa brothers transferred Leon to Asda two years ago as part of efforts to ease debt burdens at their forecourt empire. With Zuber Issa exiting his stake in Asda last year and Mohsin Issa remaining a shareholder in the supermarket, Leon’s latest change of ownership signals a pivotal shift in its direction.

While neither Leon nor Asda has disclosed the latest sale price, sources indicate the transaction was completed at a notable discount from the 2021 valuation. John Vincent has commented that he intends to thoroughly assess the current state of the business before making decisive strategic moves, emphasising a renewed focus on customer enjoyment and health.

The sale comes after public concern voiced by Henry Dimbleby, who lamented Leon’s drift towards less healthy menu items such as burgers, fried chips, chicken nuggets, and desserts, alongside the launch of Leon-branded frozen foods and microwave pouches in supermarkets. Dimbleby remarked that short-term revenue goals had led the chain away from its founding principles, risking long-term brand damage.

Leon has faced commercial headwinds, with reported revenues slipping to £62.5m in 2024 from £64.9m the previous year, according to its recent financial results. The downturn has been attributed to a challenging UK economic climate and consumer restraint. Efforts to bolster sales through product diversification and expansion in supermarket coffee stations have not reversed the decline.

An Asda spokesperson expressed gratitude to Leon’s employees for their efforts during the two-year tenure under the supermarket’s ownership, wishing them success under Vincent’s renewed leadership. As Leon prepares for a period of introspection and recalibration, the brand’s loyal following will be watching closely to see if it can recapture its original mission and reverse its recent fortunes.<
