RBC Capital Markets has upgraded Atalaya Mining Copper to Outperform, raising its price target to 1,100 pence from 1,000 pence. The move reflects an increasingly favourable political environment surrounding the Touro copper project and the company’s robust financial position.

The revised target suggests potential upside of approximately 38 per cent for the mining operator, which runs the Proyecto Riotinto copper complex in south-western Spain whilst advancing development of both Touro and Masa Valverde projects.

Analysts at the Canadian bank’s London desk anticipate approval of Touro’s environmental permit during the third quarter. Recent judicial and political developments have substantially improved the project’s prospects in favour of Atalaya, according to the research note.

The brokerage highlighted what it perceives as an asymmetric risk-reward profile ahead of an imminent permit decision. Should the project proceed as planned, Touro has the capacity to double group copper-equivalent production to approximately 100,000 tonnes annually by 2030.

The project is expected to generate roughly $150 million in annual free cash flow at current spot prices, representing a significant enhancement to Atalaya’s financial profile. The company concluded the second quarter with €340 million in net cash, exceeding RBC’s €320 million estimate for Touro’s construction requirements.

This cash position provides Atalaya with sufficient resources to fund the project development whilst maintaining financial flexibility. The upgrade reflects growing confidence in the project timeline and the company’s ability to execute on its expansion strategy in the European copper sector.
