The renowned British wax jacket manufacturer J Barbour & Sons has announced its controlling family will receive a £30 million dividend following a remarkable surge in annual profits, which rose by nearly a third.

The iconic brand, established in 1894, has experienced significant growth in recent years through strategic collaborations with luxury fashion labels, notable models, and musicians. The Barbour family maintains sole ownership and active involvement in operations, with 84-year-old Dame Margaret Barbour serving as chairman.

Company records filed at Companies House reveal the substantial £30 million final dividend recommendation for the year ending April, marking the first dividend distribution in two years. Pre-tax profits demonstrated impressive growth, reaching £45.84 million compared to £36.3 million in the previous financial period.

Despite facing challenging market conditions that led to a 6.2 per cent decline in overall turnover to £321.8 million, the company’s direct-to-consumer sales through retail outlets and online channels showed positive growth. The South Shields-based enterprise attributed its profit increase to successful cost-reduction initiatives and favourable foreign exchange movements.

Managing Director Steve Buck emphasised the company’s strategic focus on high-quality, profitable sales amid challenging global markets. The brand has maintained its pricing structure despite significant cost pressures, demonstrating its commitment to consumer value while successfully reducing supply chain costs without workforce reductions.

The royal warrant holder, which began by supplying oilskins to northeast England’s maritime community, now boasts an extensive range of outerwear and accessories. Its prestigious clientele includes the Prince and Princess of Wales, alongside celebrities Sienna Miller and Alexa Chung. Contemporary partnerships with brands like Gucci and Ganni have successfully attracted younger consumers, solidifying Barbour’s position as a cross-generational British fashion powerhouse.
