The aviation industry giant Boeing confronts renewed scrutiny following a catastrophic crash of its 787-8 Dreamliner in Ahmedabad, India, resulting in 241 fatalities. The incident has forced CEO Kelly Ortberg to cancel his anticipated appearance at the prestigious Paris Air Show, where he had planned to showcase the company’s renewed commitment to safety.

The London-bound Air India aircraft plummeted shortly after takeoff, devastating several buildings and claiming additional lives on the ground. Whilst crash investigations typically point towards pilot error, the incident has reignited concerns about Boeing’s safety protocols, sending the company’s shares tumbling 4.8% and erasing billions in market value.

This latest crisis emerges as Boeing attempts to rebuild its reputation following the controversial 737-Max incidents and recent whistleblower allegations. Former quality inspector Sam Salehpour’s testimony to the US Senate highlighted potential oversight failures, claiming management prioritised production deadlines over safety measures.

Ortberg, an engineer by background who emerged from retirement to lead Boeing, has implemented strategic changes, including relocating executive offices to Seattle near primary manufacturing facilities. The company showed promising signs of recovery before this incident, securing 303 aircraft orders in May – their strongest monthly performance since December 2023.

India’s ministry of civil aviation has suggested potential groundings of its 787-8 fleet, despite the Dreamliner’s previously unblemished safety record. Boeing’s technical experts stand ready to assist Indian authorities in the investigation, yet the timing proves particularly challenging for a company striving to convince stakeholders of its reformed safety culture.

The outcome of this investigation holds significant implications for Boeing’s future, as the company battles to maintain customer confidence whilst managing its existing order book of 1,100 operational 787 aircraft worldwide.
