# Breaking the Sound Barrier Boom Supersonic Test Flight Marks New Era in Commercial Aviation

A significant milestone in commercial aviation occurred yesterday as Boom Supersonic’s XB-1 prototype successfully broke the sound barrier during a test flight over the Mojave desert in California, marking the first commercial venture to achieve supersonic speeds since Concorde’s retirement.

The test flight witnessed the XB-1 demonstrator reaching Mach 1.1, approximately 845 mph (1,360 km/h), at an altitude of 10,700 metres. Chief test pilot Tristan “Geppetto” Brandenburg reported exceptional performance, noting it was the aircraft’s best flight to date.

Market confidence in Boom Supersonic’s ambitious plans is evidenced by 130 preorders from major carriers including American Airlines, United Airlines, and Japan Airlines. The company’s North Carolina facility aims to produce 66 Overture aircraft annually, with each capable of transporting 64-80 passengers across the Atlantic in merely 3.5 hours.

The economic viability of supersonic travel has been carefully considered in Boom’s strategy. Unlike Concorde, which struggled with operational costs, Boom’s aircraft are designed with lighter materials and enhanced efficiency. The company’s CEO, Blake Scholl, emphasises the crucial difference between their approach and Concorde’s 1960s technology.

Environmental considerations remain central to Boom’s strategy, with commitments to utilise up to 100% sustainable aviation fuel. While still producing greenhouse gases, these emissions are notably lower than traditional jet fuels, addressing growing concerns about aviation’s environmental impact.

The successful test flight represents a crucial step towards Boom’s ultimate goal of achieving Mach 1.7 speeds in commercial aviation, positioning the company at the forefront of the next generation of air travel innovation.
