Brighton is set to transform its electric vehicle charging infrastructure with a landmark investment that positions the city as a leader in on-street recharging across the UK. The local council has placed an order for 6,000 lamppost charging points, marking the largest single initiative in Britain aimed at enhancing facilities for electric vehicles.

This ambitious project is part of a broader government initiative that allocates £380 million to bolster local electric vehicle infrastructure. The move comes as part of a concerted effort to address the growing demand for accessible public charging solutions in urban areas, particularly for residents without private parking.

Established by Char.gy, a prominent operator within the sector, the contract allows Brighton to expand its charging capabilities significantly. Currently, there are around 74,000 public chargers across the UK, equating to approximately one charger per 18 electric vehicles. Brighton and Hove, with its high number of terraced houses and shared accommodations, faces unique challenges in this aspect.

John Lewis, Chief Executive of Char.gy, explained that lamppost charging presents a cost-effective and efficient way to enhance the electrical infrastructure. This approach utilises existing power supplies and avoids the need for extensive roadworks, facilitating quicker deployment across the city.

The pricing structure for these charging points will be designed around both peak and off-peak tariffs, influenced by the agreements made between Char.gy and Brighton & Hove Council. The varied pricing model aims to reflect the cost of electricity while ensuring competitive rates for users.

Brighton’s initiative represents a significant step towards achieving government targets for electric vehicle adoption. With many councils yet to commence similar projects, Brighton’s proactive approach could pave the way for other regions to follow suit in enhancing their electric vehicle infrastructure.
