# British flying taxi completes cross country trip marking milestone for air mobility

The UK’s first electric flying taxi has achieved a significant milestone, completing a cross-country flight through open airspace in Europe. The prototype VX4 aircraft, developed by Bristol-based Vertical Aerospace, is designed to carry one pilot and four passengers. It successfully reached speeds of up to 150mph, showcasing a range of 100 miles during the landmark journey.

The aircraft, carrying out its maiden wing-borne flight in open airspace, had previously been restricted to controlled test environments. Simon Davies, the pilot steering the innovative craft, described the experience as a “career highlight”. He remarked that the test underscored the accuracy of their performance predictions, affirming the results of extensive ground testing and preparation.

This achievement marks a key step forward in the drive towards commercial flying taxi services. The VX4’s design enables vertical take-off and landing, reminiscent of a helicopter, but it also provides a quieter and more eco-friendly solution for urban transport. Projections suggest such zero-emission aircraft could reshape connectivity between cities and airports, with commercial operations eyed for launch by 2028.

The government’s commitment to pioneering aviation solutions has been evident, with £20 million recently allocated to support programmes developing drones and air taxis. Vertical Aerospace is among a handful of companies leading this race, leveraging government backing alongside £70 million in private funding from US-based Mudrick Capital. Nevertheless, reports indicate the company must secure additional funding within the next year to maintain momentum and achieve broader goals.

The potential for such technology extends beyond convenience, promising an environmentally sustainable alternative to traditional air travel. Industry leaders believe flying taxis could revolutionise urban infrastructure while reducing emissions globally. The anticipation surrounding the VX4’s success underscores growing excitement within this burgeoning sector.
