A British satellite company has successfully raised 30 million in funding, supported by the Nato Innovation Fund, as the UK intensifies efforts to advance its position in the competitive space race. SatVu, the London-based firm, focuses on delivering high-resolution thermal imagery for government and private defence customers. The latest funding round has brought the company’s total capital to 60 million, aimed at establishing a constellation of satellites.

SatVu has plans for two satellites scheduled for launch this year, with an additional three already under contract. These satellites are crucial for providing what the company terms persistent and scalable thermal intelligence. This technology enables the detection and assessment of operational changes across complex and contested environments.

The recent financing round also saw participation from the British Business Bank, SPARX Asset Management, and Presto Tech Horizons. This effort follows a government-backed defence innovation loan secured by the company last year. The Nato Innovation Fund, which launched in 2022 and is backed by 24 Nato allies, aims to invest in science and engineering startups to bolster the defence, security, and resilience of member nations.

According to Anthony Baker, co-founder and chief executive of SatVu, the investment will facilitate the scaling of a UK-built sovereign thermal capability. This capability is set to support both UK government customers and allied nations worldwide. The firm’s thermal intelligence technology plays an essential role in modern intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance operations.

The latest funding round is positioned to enhance SatVu’s ability to deliver services at scale. This will accelerate the company’s strategy and increase its agility in responding to evolving defence and security requirements. The company aims to become a partner of choice for nations that require certainty in an increasingly contested world.

At the end of January, SatVu had secured 6 million in pre-orders ahead of the launch of its second satellite. Luke Pollard, a defence minister, noted that the government is committed to strengthening national security by supporting British SMEs and startups that keep the UK defence industry at the forefront of innovation.
