Burberry Group PLC has delivered its strongest quarterly performance in three years, with retail revenue rising 5% to £455 million for the 13 weeks ended 27 June. Comparable sales advanced by an identical margin, whilst the luxury house achieved simultaneous growth across womenswear, menswear, accessories and childrenswear for the first time since 2023.

Despite the positive trading update, shares in the British heritage brand fell 5% in early trading after management issued cautionary guidance regarding the macroeconomic environment. The company acknowledged ongoing uncertainty surrounding geopolitical tensions and their potential impact on consumer sentiment.

Outerwear emerged as the standout category, recording double-digit growth driven by robust demand for heritage rainwear and lightweight jackets. The company’s “Portraits of an Icon” marketing campaign proved effective, attracting 19% more new customers to its rainwear offering. Women’s handbags returned to growth after a period of weakness, whilst e-commerce sales surged by a mid-teens percentage.

Demographic trends provided additional encouragement, with Generation Z customers increasing by double digits during the quarter. This younger cohort represents a strategic priority for luxury brands seeking to establish long-term customer relationships.

Regional performance proved mixed. The Americas delivered the strongest showing with comparable sales climbing 12%, whilst Greater China expanded 9%, supported by increased engagement from younger shoppers. South Korea contributed an 11% rise, though Japan declined 2% as subdued Chinese tourist activity weighed on results. Europe and the Middle East retreated 3%, reflecting the ongoing impact of regional conflict and reduced tourist expenditure.

Chief executive Joshua Schulman highlighted the significance of achieving growth across all product divisions simultaneously, describing the outcome as validation of the company’s strategic direction. He expressed confidence in the opportunities available to the brand despite external headwinds.

Burberry raised its first-half wholesale guidance to high single-digit growth following positive feedback from distribution partners. Management maintained expectations for full-year revenue growth and margin expansion, though it qualified this outlook with reference to geopolitical uncertainty.

The market response suggests investors remain focused on forward-looking statements rather than historical performance, particularly given the elevated valuations typically assigned to luxury goods manufacturers. The cautious tone adopted by management appears to have overshadowed otherwise encouraging operational metrics.
