Changan, one of China’s largest state-owned car manufacturers, is intensifying its push into the British automotive market with the launch of its all-electric Deepal S07. With a starting price of £39990 the S07 undercuts Tesla’s Model Y by at least £5000 making it an attractive proposition for British motorists keen on more affordable electric options.

The Chongqing-based giant currently produces three million vehicles each year placing it behind only BYD in the Chinese market. Its ambitious UK plans include capturing a five per cent share of the market and reaching annual sales of 100000 units. Changan has earmarked Britain as a key entry point into Europe with the UK becoming only its second European market after Norway where electric cars dominate new registrations.

Engineering for the S07 has been tailored for British drivers at Changan’s powertrain centre of excellence in Birmingham. This R&D facility employs former engineers from Jaguar Land Rover Ford and Honda ensuring the Deepal range is optimised for the UK’s unique road conditions. The company views its established presence in the area and access to a highly skilled workforce as strategic advantages in further expanding its footprint.

The new S07 will initially be sold at Changan’s first British dealership located near Fort Dunlop in Birmingham. The carmaker has plans to open 45 showrooms across the country by year’s end and will roll out a total of six models in the UK. Early next year the range will add the Deepal S05 a slightly smaller vehicle priced around £35000 to compete directly with the Nissan Qashqai—one of the bestsellers in Britain.

The forthcoming portfolio encompasses both hybrid and all electric vehicles focusing on the popular hatchback segment previously dominated by Ford with the iconic Fiesta and now the Puma. Changan sees an opportunity to address the British demand for appealing and accessible electric cars at a time when the market is hungry for affordable alternatives to established brands.

Changan’s marketing director in the UK Nic Thomas highlights the company’s commitment to delivering the engineering quality and after sales support that customers expect suggesting that their longstanding UK base gives them an advantage over recent Chinese entrants. Looking forward the company is considering the UK as a possible hub for European manufacturing capitalising on local talent and the nation’s reputation as a centre for automotive technology and innovation.
