Chinese Owners of British Steel Reject UK Governments Cash Offer

The Chinese owners of British Steel have declined a proposal from the UK government that would see taxpayers contribute tens of millions of pounds to regain economic control of the country’s last remaining virgin steelmaker. British Steel, which operates the last blast furnace production from its Victorian site in Scunthorpe, has been under government management for nearly a year. This intervention was prompted by worries that the owner, Jingye, was planning to close the blast furnaces in April of last year.

Although the UK state has assumed day-to-day control of operations, Jingye still retains its economic interests in this strategically vital asset. British taxpayers are currently responsible for covering the operational losses of the steelworks, which have surpassed £300 million.

Jingye initially sought over £1 billion in compensation from the UK to relinquish its stake. This demand was made prior to the government’s approval of plans for China to build a new mega-embassy in central London. Recently, the government made an offer ranging from £50 million to £100 million, according to reports from Sky News. However, this offer has now been rejected by Jingye.

The refusal of the offer has led to speculation among officials in the business department regarding the potential enactment of new legislation that could enable the UK government to unilaterally take economic control of British Steel. Previous discussions had deemed such a move inadvisable due to concerns it might adversely affect future foreign investments in the UK.

Business Secretary Peter Kyle is eager to resolve the issue of British Steel’s ownership before the release of the UK steel strategy, which is now almost a year overdue. A government spokesperson stated that dialogues with Jingye are ongoing, aimed at reaching a pragmatic solution to secure the long-term future of the site.

Despite the complexities surrounding the ownership and operational status of British Steel, the discussions continue with no definitive outcomes as yet.
