CMA Proposes Sweeping Changes to Market Regulations

The Competition and Markets Authority is set to initiate major reforms by proposing the removal of 33 outdated restrictions deemed no longer relevant. This move is expected to benefit over 10,000 businesses across the United Kingdom, allowing them to save both time and money.

The CMA argues that many of these regulations, originally introduced to prevent monopolistic practices, have become obsolete. Changes in technology and consumer behaviour have rendered some regulations unnecessary, particularly those concerning large sectors such as financial services, travel, and energy.

Sarah Cardell, chief executive of the CMA, has stated that while some measures remain crucial for consumer protection and fair competition, only those that produce tangible benefits will be retained. The aim is to create a more streamlined regulatory environment that enhances the UK’s reputation as an attractive destination for business investment.

Among the rules proposed for abolition are those governing marketing practices within the travel industry, which were established during a time when most holidays were booked in stores rather than online. Similarly, the CMA believes that requirements for banks to retain current account histories for five years are redundant, as this information is now readily accessible online.

Other areas targeted for deregulation include fizzy drink marketing, ice cream sales, extended warranties for electrical goods, and local bus services. These changes come amid pressures from the government to reduce regulatory burdens that hinder growth.

While many restrictions appear to be on the chopping block, the CMA has indicated that essential regulations, such as those governing funeral services and energy bill terms for small businesses, will remain in place. The authority is currently soliciting feedback on these proposals, with a consultation closing date set for 2 March.
