Community Fibre Set to Launch Mobile Service Challenging Major Networks in 2025

A British broadband provider, backed by US private equity giant Warburg Pincus and helmed by former EE and Virgin Mobile executives, is poised to enter the UK mobile telecommunications market. Community Fibre plans to introduce e-Sim services this summer, with aims to expand into virtual Sim-only contracts, leveraging its existing customer base of nearly 400,000 subscribers.

The company’s strategic move into mobile services comes amid significant shifts in the UK telecommunications landscape. Under the leadership of CEO Graeme Oxby, previously of Virgin Media, and chairman Olaf Swantee, former EE chief executive, Community Fibre aims to capitalise on the growing trend of mobile virtual network operators (MVNO) gaining market share from traditional infrastructure operators.

Recent research by Enders Analysis reveals a notable trend: UK network operators experienced their first-ever loss in contract subscribers last year, while MVNOs gained 1.65 million customers. This shift is largely attributed to the cost-of-living crisis and extended handset lifespans, driving increased demand for Sim-only contracts.

Despite generating adjusted earnings of £8 million last year and maintaining a network reaching 1.3 million premises, Community Fibre reported a pre-tax loss of £119 million. The company projects achieving positive cash flow by early 2026, improving from an £8 million outflow in the previous year.

The broader altnet sector faces mounting pressures from escalating costs, debt burdens, and intense price competition as providers seek to recover substantial infrastructure investments. These challenges have fuelled speculation about potential industry consolidation, though merger activity remains subdued due to valuation disparities between buyers and institutional backers.
