Deutsche Bank has reaffirmed its sell rating on BT Group PLC, maintaining a 150 pence price target despite the telecommunications company delivering marginally better than expected first quarter results. The stance implies approximately 23 per cent downside from the current market price of around 194 pence.

The German investment bank’s analysts retained their negative outlook following BT’s latest trading update, which revealed only modest outperformance relative to forecasts. UK service revenue exceeded expectations by a mere 0.3 per cent, whilst EBITDA came in 0.2 per cent ahead of consensus estimates. However, the results showed revenue growth momentum had decelerated during the period.

Performance at Openreach, BT’s network infrastructure division, presented a mixed picture. Line losses showed sequential improvement compared with the fourth quarter, yet remained weaker on a year-on-year basis. Management reiterated previous guidance that the company anticipates approximately 800,000 line losses throughout the 2027 financial year.

Deutsche Bank acknowledged that BT shares might derive some near-term support from the lack of negative surprises in the quarterly results. This comes after the stock retreated from recent highs, potentially creating scope for a technical bounce. The bank’s analysts noted this possibility whilst maintaining their fundamentally cautious view.

The sell rating reflects concerns about the structural challenges facing BT within the competitive UK telecommunications landscape. Deutsche Bank stated it sees “little reason to be more constructive” on the stock given what it characterises as significant competitive risks in the domestic market. These headwinds appear to outweigh any modest operational improvements evident in the first quarter performance.

The cautious stance on BT Group contrasts with the company’s own confidence, as reflected in management’s decision to reiterate full-year guidance despite the challenging operating environment. The divergence between Deutsche Bank’s outlook and management expectations highlights ongoing debate amongst market participants regarding the telecommunications sector’s prospects in an increasingly competitive and regulated environment.
