The update allows users to view pricing information directly within the app when searching for fuel stations, with details listed beneath the location descriptions. This data is sourced from the government’s Fuel Finder scheme, which mandates that UK forecourts update their prices on the platform within 30 minutes of any change.\n\nThe introduction of this feature follows a recent spike in fuel costs, specifically after diesel prices exceeded two pounds per litre for the first time. Simon Williams, policy head at the RAC, described this milestone as a threshold that no one wished to cross. Although diesel prices have since dropped by two pence, the AA reports that an average 55-litre tank of diesel still costs around 110 pounds, while the petrol equivalent is approximately 96 pounds. Global fuel costs have been significantly impacted by the US conflict with Iran and Russia’s war with Ukraine, contributing to the sustained pressure on prices.\n\nGoogle Maps is a widely used navigation tool, with Ofcom data indicating that 77 per cent of Britain’s adult population uses the service. While other applications, such as Waze, already provide similar pricing features, Apple Maps does not currently display fuel prices, though third-party apps can link to its mapping services on iPhones. The addition of this data aims to provide a more comprehensive overview for users who rely on Google for general navigation.\n\nDespite the new integration, some industry experts have raised concerns about the reliability of the Fuel Finder data. Clare Lafferty, director at price comparison site PetrolPrices, stated that the government feed alone does not provide sufficient coverage or accuracy. She noted that some sites have not registered with the scheme, while others fail to update prices within the required timeframe. Her firm identified 200 forecourts in September that it believed had not updated their diesel prices in time.\n\nIn response, Sarah-Jayne Williams, director of product partnerships for Google Maps and Waze, assured that the company would independently verify the data. She explained that prices would only be displayed if there was high confidence in their accuracy, ensuring that users are not misled by outdated information. The Petrol Retailers Association, which represents thousands of UK retailers, maintains that its members are complying with the reporting requirements. Fuel Finder was launched in February by former chancellor Rachel Reeves, who suggested at the time that the scheme could save households 40 pounds per year."}
