The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero has disclosed that it spent over four million pounds on advertising and marketing services in the final quarter of the 2025 to 2026 financial year. This expenditure represents a fourfold increase compared to the same period a year earlier. The department stated that the funds were primarily directed towards campaigns promoting heat pumps and electric vehicles, following a high-profile advertisement featuring former model and race car driver Jodie Kidd driving an electric vehicle earlier this year.

New data released by the department indicates that it allocated 4.13 million pounds specifically to advertising during this three-month period. An additional 97,283.52 pounds was spent on media and design services. In the corresponding quarter of the previous year, the department had spent 592,320.84 pounds on advertising and 500,431.45 pounds on marketing and media expenses. A spokesperson for the department explained that the reporting for March reflected spending across the last quarter of the 2025 to 2026 financial year, rather than advertising activity limited to March itself. The department added that its campaigns adhere to strict standards set by the Cabinet Office to ensure efficiency and effectiveness in government communication.

In a separate government-funded campaign, the former model collaborated with the Department for Transport to drive an electric car on a road trip from Land’s End to the Angel of the North. A DESNZ spokesperson claimed that these successful marketing campaigns have encouraged tens of thousands of homeowners to purchase heat pumps and increased demand for electric vehicles. The department stated that these efforts have helped households across the country save more than eight million pounds on energy bills.

The increased spending comes amid political controversy regarding government expenditure on climate initiatives. In September, the UK government faced accusations of attempting to deceive the public after spending more than 170,000 pounds on 16 influencers to promote the net zero agenda. A freedom of information request revealed that 175,000 pounds was spent on clean energy social media influencer content on TikTok and Instagram. By September, 135,000 pounds had been spent on content created in the past year by 12 influencers, with a further 39,000 pounds allocated for content created in the 2024 to 2025 period.

Conservative politicians have criticised these expenditures. Harriet Cross, the shadow energy minister and MP for Gordon and Buchan, accused the Labour government of deceiving the public over the energy transition. She argued that while households are concerned about the cost of living and rising energy bills, the government is choosing to spend money to promote net zero rather than to help consumers. The Scottish Conservatives stated that the UK government’s energy-related advertising spend relates to the clean energy campaign, which seeks to achieve zero-carbon electricity by 2030 and eventually eliminate the use of oil and gas.
