Iran’s foreign minister has characterised the threat of a fresh round of United States economic sanctions as a desperate ploy, maintaining that the nation remains unbowed by Washington’s efforts to isolate its economy. This defiant stance was articulated by Abbas Araghchi in a video message posted on Telegram on Sunday, where he suggested that the shift from military operations to renewed economic pressure indicated a lack of viable alternatives for US leadership. Araghchi asserted that previous blockades and military moves had failed and predicted that the current initiative would meet the same fate, urging Washington to engage in respectful dialogue to find a solution grounded in justice and honour.

The foreign minister’s comments followed remarks by President Masoud Pezeshkian, who acknowledged that the Iranian people are facing significant challenges. In a speech broadcast on state television, Pezeshkian stated that the actions of US President Donald Trump had thrust the country into a full-scale economic, military and security war. He admitted to the existence of societal problems, including inflation, unemployment and livelihood issues, while expressing the government’s determination to overcome these obstacles to secure a dignified future for its citizens. This admission of internal economic strain contrasts with the hardline rhetoric employed by other senior officials in Tehran, highlighting a complex domestic response to external pressure.

The diplomatic friction comes as the US Treasury secretary, Scott Bessent, prepares to announce further punitive measures, which he has described as the toughest sanctions in history. Last week, President Trump announced a new campaign to increase pressure on the Iranian economy, labelling it the most crushing economic operation ever taken against any country. The US has been carrying out Operation Economic Fury for months, aiming to cut off Iranian funding through targeted sanctions and a naval blockade in the strait of Hormuz. This waterway, which previously served as the conduit for one-fifth of the world’s oil supplies, remains a focal point of the conflict, with Iran currently in control of the passage following the collapse of a ceasefire agreement signed in June.

In response to the escalating economic warfare, Mohsen Rezaei, the hardline leader of Iran’s supreme national security council, issued warnings to regional neighbours. Speaking on state television, Rezaei threatened to target oil-shipping routes out of the Gulf if neighbouring states joined the US efforts to squeeze Tehran’s economy. He stated that such neighbours would be considered enemies and that their interests would be targeted. Rezaei further claimed that Iran had not yet attacked American economic interests, suggesting that US oil and economic companies in the region could become future targets if sanctions are imposed. He also indicated that discussions with Oman regarding the management of the waterway were ongoing, with plans to impose fees.

The international community is increasingly involved in efforts to mitigate the impact of the conflict on global energy supplies. The United Arab Emirates, a key trading partner for Iran, announced the suspension of all trade and financial transactions with Tehran until further notice. Meanwhile, Washington has called on other governments, including China, to join its isolation efforts, although Beijing has criticised the initiative, arguing that sanctions will not resolve the conflict in the Middle East. In a move to develop alternative routes to the strait of Hormuz, French President Emmanuel Macron and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman are expected to discuss logistics and energy connections during a two-day visit to Paris. Proposals under consideration include increasing trade through Omani ports, expanding pipelines in Saudi Arabia, and developing new rail links, with a taskforce scheduled to meet at the ministerial level to secure financing and identify strategic projects.
