Jaguar Land Rover faces weeks of disruption as cyber attack stalls production

Jaguar Land Rover’s manufacturing operations have ground to a halt after a severe cyber-attack infiltrated digital systems at the UK’s largest automotive group. Production at the Halewood, Solihull and Wolverhampton factories remains suspended, with thousands of employees instructed to stay home but assured they will receive full pay during the ongoing investigation and recovery process.

The Tata-owned carmaker first uncovered the security breach a week ago, prompting the immediate suspension of assembly and a complete shutdown of key digital platforms. Sources suggest the effects will ripple through September and possibly into October, with suppliers such as Evtec, WHS Plastics, and OPmobility also ceasing operations at JLR’s instruction. Many of these businesses have similarly asked their staff not to attend the workplace until further notice.

While the precise nature of the breach remains under close scrutiny, the Information Commissioner’s Office has been notified regarding potential risks to data. No evidence has yet emerged of personal information being accessed, although the company is functioning without a host of critical IT systems, including core databases relating to supply chain and spare parts.

Dealerships and service centres continue trading but must rely on manual processing and traditional communication methods to register vehicles and manage parts orders. Processes that usually take minutes are now causing significant backlogs, exacerbating the wider disruption across the sector.

The cyber-attack bears the hallmarks of English-speaking hacker collectives, with the group amalgamating names such as Scattered Spider, Lapsus, and ShinyHunters posting screenshots online and claiming responsibility. JLR has enlisted the support of leading cybersecurity advisers and law enforcement in a bid to restore digital infrastructure in a controlled manner and to assess the full impact on business operations.

JLR management has expressed gratitude to the workforce, customers and suppliers for their patience, underscoring their commitment to full transparency and ongoing updates as they restore production capability. Though retail partners remain open, the company’s leadership faces mounting pressure to resolve the crisis quickly and minimise long-term financial repercussions within the highly competitive automotive market.
