The iconic fried chicken chain KFC has unveiled plans to sever its historical ties with Kentucky, announcing the relocation of its corporate headquarters to Plano, Texas. This strategic move has sparked significant controversy among local politicians and community leaders in Kentucky.
The decision by parent company Yum Brands will see approximately 100 corporate employees transferred to Texas over the next six months. The relocation forms part of a broader organisational restructure, establishing two primary brand headquarters in the United States: Plano, Texas, for KFC and Pizza Hut operations, and Irvine, California, for Taco Bell and Habit Burger & Grill.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear expressed his dismay, stating the move would have disappointed the company’s founder, Colonel Harland Sanders, who established the first KFC restaurant in Corbin, Kentucky, in 1930. The brand’s success story, built upon Sanders’ signature blend of 11 herbs and spices, has grown to encompass more than 24,000 outlets across 145 countries.
Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg has requested a meeting with Yum’s chief executive, emphasising the deep-rooted connection between Kentucky and the brand. Despite the relocation, Yum Brands aims to maintain its corporate presence in Louisville with 560 employees and has pledged a $1 million endowment to the University of Louisville’s College of Business.
The migration to Texas follows a pattern of major corporations, including Tesla and SpaceX, attracted by the state’s favourable business environment. Yum’s chief executive, David Gibbs, defended the move as essential for sustainable growth, citing enhanced collaboration opportunities among brands and employees as a key driver for the decision.
The company has committed to providing relocation support for affected employees and plans to establish a new restaurant in Louisville, maintaining some presence in its historical home state. However, this corporate exodus represents a significant shift in KFC’s operational strategy and cultural identity.
