Kodal Minerals PLC has received an initial repayment of 13 million dollars from the operator of its Bougouni lithium project in Mali, marking the first return of funds advanced to support capital expenditure at the West African mining operation. The payment reflects the project’s growing financial stability as elevated spodumene prices continue to support operations.

The repayment was made by Les Mines de Lithium de Bougouni to Kodal Mining UK, a joint venture in which Kodal maintains a 49 per cent interest alongside majority partner Hainan Mining. The funds have been allocated towards reducing the outstanding balance on the Hainan loan facility, strengthening the venture’s financial position.

Chief executive Bernard Aylward indicated that favourable pricing conditions are enabling the mining operator to deliver robust returns, with further regular repayments anticipated in the coming months.

Production figures for the quarter ended 30 June showed the Bougouni operation yielded 26,174 dry metric tonnes of spodumene concentrate at a grade of 5.34 per cent lithium oxide. This brought the year-to-date output to 53,195 tonnes, though the quarterly result fell short of management targets.

The production shortfall was attributed primarily to maintenance and breakdown issues affecting the crushing circuit, which constrained feed rates to the dense media separation processing plant during May. Management reported that maintenance work has since been completed, with throughput returning to normal operational levels in June. The mobilisation of additional mining equipment to the Ngoualana open pit has also contributed to improved mining rates.

On the export front, a third shipment totalling approximately 20,400 tonnes of concentrate reached Hainan port on 27 June, bringing cumulative exports to more than 69,000 tonnes. This shipment was priced at 2,304 dollars per tonne, calculated according to the agreed weighting of Shanghai Metal Market Chinese and African CIF indices for 6 per cent concentrate. An interim payment of 34.4 million dollars has already been received for this consignment.

A fourth shipment of around 24,200 tonnes departed from San Pedro in Côte d’Ivoire on 11 July, with arrival at Hainan expected in late August. Management confirmed that exports will continue on a regular schedule, typically spaced between six weeks and two months apart, with revenue from both the third and fourth shipments anticipated during the current quarter.

Looking ahead, the operation has implemented preparations for the upcoming wet season to maintain consistent production levels. Management emphasised its focus on meeting budgeted targets whilst exercising prudent cash management controls as the operation matures.
