The automotive industry is witnessing a significant shift in consumer behaviour as JLR, the West Midlands-based Indian-owned manufacturer, reports a remarkable 29 per cent increase in plug-in hybrid vehicle sales during the first half of its financial year.

Market data reveals that buyers are increasingly gravitating towards hybrid models, particularly as uncertainty looms over the timeline for exclusive electric vehicle sales. This trend has proven especially advantageous for Range Rover and Land Rover brands, with their plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) experiencing substantial growth.

Range Rover’s global PHEV sales have climbed by an impressive 47 per cent, while the Defender brand recorded a 23 per cent increase. These figures build upon the company’s robust performance in the previous financial year, which saw a 59 per cent rise in global PHEV sales.

British markets have demonstrated particularly strong adoption rates, with JLR’s PHEV sales surging by 55 per cent to reach 20,800 units. PHEVs now represent the fastest-growing segment in the UK automotive market, capturing 8 per cent of total sales and overtaking traditional diesel vehicles.

Mark Camilleri, JLR’s director of electric vehicles, notes that PHEVs serve as an effective stepping stone towards full electrification, offering customers valuable experience with charging infrastructure and electric mobility. The company’s Range Rover PHEV models boast a zero-emission range of 70 miles, significantly exceeding the average UK daily driving distance of 20 miles.

Looking ahead, JLR has committed to introducing fully electric versions of its Range Rover, Defender, and Discovery models by 2030, while its Jaguar brand is set to become exclusively electric from 2025. This strategic approach aligns with growing consumer interest in electrified vehicles whilst acknowledging the market’s gradual transition away from conventional powertrains.
