# Harvey selects London to launch new pro bono legal AI tool

Legal AI company Harvey has designated London as the launch site for a new product aimed at supporting pro bono legal work. The US-headquartered start-up is using the initiative to accelerate its expansion into new sectors of the legal industry. The offering, which became available to clients in the UK, US and Australia on Tuesday, provides law firms with tools to manage high volumes of free legal advice. This support covers areas such as housing assistance, veterans services and social welfare claims.

Harvey collaborated with senior pro bono leaders from Ashurst Perkins Coie, DLA Piper and Nelson Mullins to introduce the programme. Katie Burke, the firm’s chief operating officer, explained that London was chosen because it serves as an epicentre for the global legal market. She noted that many clients are based in the city or conduct significant business there, making it a logical headquarters for the responsible business programme. Burke also highlighted the growing emphasis on responsible AI, stating that the company aims to pioneer this conversation alongside its customers.

Founded in 2022, Harvey secured its first client with City-based law firm A&O Shearman. Burke described the partnership as fundamental to the company’s existence. Since then, the firm has grown significantly, with hundreds of staff now based in London. The company is currently expanding beyond its existing floor in King’s Cross, a move Burke characterised as a positive indicator of growth. She added that headquartering key initiatives in London reflects the quality of local talent and strong demand from the customer base.

The legal technology sector remains competitive, with Harvey vying for market share against rivals such as Legora and Clio. Telecoms giant Vodafone also entered the space in August by announcing the co-development of a legal tech tool. Despite this competition, Burke believes the pro bono programme distinguishes Harvey. She stated that the initiative is valued by clients from both a business and personal perspective. Burke reported that the importance of this initiative was a recurring theme in meetings with existing customers and prospects.
