Emergency protocols have been activated by the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and Westminster City Council following a cyber attack affecting both local authorities. The incident, which was detected on Monday morning, struck shared IT systems and disrupted key digital services used by approximately 360,000 residents across the boroughs.

Both councils have implemented business continuity measures; several computerised systems, including telephony and online services such as council tax checks and parking fine payments, have been temporarily disabled to contain potential damage. Authorities stressed that essential services will be prioritised, particularly those aimed at assisting vulnerable citizens, as engineers work round the clock to restore affected platforms.

Senior officials have announced that, at this early stage, the identity and motives of the perpetrators remain unknown. As investigations proceed, the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea has indicated that the possibility of personal data being compromised is currently under review. Cyber security specialists and the National Cyber Security Centre are collaborating closely with council teams to secure data, restore operations, and safeguard critical public services.

The incident has raised concerns in local government circles, as other London councils remain on alert due to intelligence suggesting multiple recent cyber attacks targeting municipal infrastructure. Although the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham shares some IT systems with the affected councils, its status remains unclear.
