# London New York Air Route Falls to Tenth Place as Asian Aviation Dominates Global Rankings

Heathrow Airport’s prestigious New York JFK route is barely maintaining its position among the world’s top ten busiest international air services, symbolising a significant shift in global aviation patterns towards Asian dominance.

Data from aviation analytics firm OAG reveals a dramatic realignment of air travel, with Asian routes now commanding seven of the top ten international positions. The Heathrow-JFK corridor, managing just over 4 million seats in 2024, has witnessed a steady decline from its pre-pandemic fifth-place ranking to its current tenth position.

The Hong Kong-Taipei route has emerged as the clear global leader, recording an impressive 6.7 million seats in 2024. This development reflects the broader transformation of international air travel, with Middle Eastern routes also gaining prominence. The Cairo-Jeddah service, driven by religious tourism, has experienced a remarkable 62 per cent growth since pre-pandemic levels, securing the second position with 5.4 million seats.

On the domestic front, Asian routes continue to dominate. The Seoul Gimpo to Jeju International service maintains its position as the world’s busiest domestic route, while Japanese internal flights between Tokyo Haneda and cities like Sapporo and Fukuoka occupy prominent positions in the rankings.

The shift in aviation patterns has left European routes largely overshadowed, with Heathrow-Dubai emerging as Europe’s second busiest international route, managing 3.1 million seats. This transformation underscores the increasing economic influence of Asian markets and their growing significance in global air travel.

The changing landscape presents both challenges and opportunities for traditional aviation powerhouses, as they adapt to an increasingly Asia-centric air travel environment. The data suggests this trend is likely to continue, potentially reshaping long-established aviation hierarchies in the years ahead.
