Multiple leading infant formula manufacturer, have issued extensive product recalls across more than 60 countries following concerns over potential contamination with a harmful toxin. The recalls, which have been ongoing since December, now encompass a total of 28 batches of baby formula products.
The affected products include traces of cereulide, a heat-resistant toxin, were discovered in one batch of Aptamil First Infant Formula during January testing.
Both Danone and Nestle have provided assurances to the Food Standards Agency that the recalled batches were produced some time ago and are unlikely to remain on retail shelves throughout the United Kingdom. However, parents and caregivers are being urged to check supplies stored at home, as these products may still be present in household cupboards.
Cereulide represents a particularly concerning contaminant due to its resistance to cooking temperatures and preparation methods typically used when making infant milk. Consumption of this toxin can result in gastrointestinal symptoms, including nausea, vomiting and abdominal cramps.
The Food Standards Agency has identified the source of contamination as arachidonic acid oil, an ingredient added to infant formula to replicate certain growth properties found in breast milk. The contamination originated from a third-party supplier, which the manufacturers have subsequently ceased using.
Katie Pettifer, Chief Executive of the Food Standards Agency, emphasised that investigations remain ongoing. She stated that food businesses bear legal responsibility for selling safe products, which includes verifying the safety of ingredients sourced from suppliers. The FSA is collaborating with international food safety authorities on this global recall and expects manufacturers to provide comprehensive explanations of the failures and assurances regarding prevention of future incidents.
