Meta Platforms Inc has confronted internal challenges in its ambitious restructuring programme, with chief executive Mark Zuckerberg admitting to staff that the company’s artificial intelligence agent systems have failed to progress at the anticipated pace, according to a recording obtained by Reuters.

During an internal town hall meeting held on Thursday, Zuckerberg acknowledged that the restructuring, which encompassed substantial workforce reductions and extensive redeployment of personnel towards artificial intelligence initiatives, had not proceeded as smoothly as intended. Senior executives miscalculated the timing of these organisational changes, he stated, whilst noting that the company’s strategic bets on the revised structure had “not come to fruition yet”.

The social media conglomerate implemented sweeping changes in May, eliminating approximately 10% of its global workforce whilst reassigning roughly 7,000 employees to artificial intelligence-focused teams. These measures formed part of a broader strategy to allocate resources towards large-scale investments in AI infrastructure and position the organisation to capitalise on efficiency improvements from AI-assisted operations.

The restructuring generated significant internal resistance and heightened concerns regarding employee morale, though Zuckerberg has previously assured staff that no additional company-wide redundancies are expected during the current year. According to the recording, he stated that “the trajectory of the agentic development over at least the last four months hasn’t really accelerated in the way that we expected”, referring to AI agents designed as automated systems capable of performing tasks autonomously on behalf of users.

Zuckerberg indicated that internal deliberations earlier in the year stemmed from concerns that Meta was not adapting with sufficient speed. He disclosed that executives had maintained excessively optimistic expectations regarding tools such as Claude Code from artificial intelligence startup Anthropic during the planning phases of the restructuring initiative.

Notwithstanding the slower than anticipated progress, Zuckerberg expressed confidence that Meta will begin to realise more substantial benefits from its artificial intelligence investments within the next three to six months. The company is projected to allocate as much as $145 billion towards AI infrastructure during the current year, contributing to a broader wave of expenditure by major technology companies that collectively surpasses $700 billion directed towards artificial intelligence development.

A Meta spokesperson declined to provide commentary on the report, according to Reuters. Shares in Meta concluded Thursday’s trading session down 5% at approximately $583.
