Microsoft confirms multibillion-dollar investment in ChatGPT firm

Microsoft announced that it will deepen its partnership with ChatGPT, the company behind artificial intelligence program ChatGPT. The announcement included a multibillion-dollar investment in the business.

The company stated that the agreement with OpenAI would see the deployment of the company’s artificial Intelligence models across Microsoft products. This includes the Bing search engine as well as its office software like Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence chatbot that has become a huge success since its launch in November. Users are amazed at the bot’s ability to do a wide range of tasks, from sonnet writing to job application submissions.

It is at forefront of generative AI (technology that uses large amounts of text and images to create content).

It’s also been called “a gamechanger” and will be a challenge to teachers at schools and universities. There are concerns that students may already use the chatbot for high-quality essays without any human input.

Microsoft announced the “third phase” of its partnership in a blog post. It stated that the investment would include supercomputer development and cloud computing support for OpenAI via Microsoft Azure.

Previous reports have indicated that Microsoft was looking at a $10bn investment (PS8bn), in OpenAI.

Satya Nadella (Microsoft’s chief executive and chairman) said, “We formed our partnership to OpenAI around the shared ambition of responsibly advance cutting-edge AI Research and democratise AI As a New Technology Platform.”

“In the next phase of our partnership developers and organizations across industries will be able to access the best AI infrastructure and models with Azure to create and run their apps.”

Monday’s announcement marks Microsoft’s third investment into San Francisco-based OpenAI. It was founded by Elon Musk, Sam Altman and others. Microsoft, along with other support, has built a supercomputer in order to power OpenAI technology since the announcements.

Analyst at Wedbush Securities in the US, Dan Ives said that ChatGPT is one of the most exciting AI technologies in the market. “Microsoft is clearly being aggressive and will not be behind on what could potentially be a game-changing AI investment.

“Nadella & Co. are leading the AI race today and this investment marks a major notch in the AI belt.”
