Mission Mars, the fast-growing hospitality group behind Rudy’s pizzerias and Albert’s Schloss beer halls, is considering a sale of its business that could exceed £100 million. The Manchester-based company has enlisted advisers from Houlihan Lokey to explore potential buyers for the entire group or for individual assets such as the highly popular Neapolitan pizza chain Rudy’s.
Founded by hospitality veterans Roy Ellis and Neil Macleod, acclaimed for their previous venture Revolution Bars Group, Mission Mars has rapidly expanded its footprint across the UK. The company currently operates more than 30 Rudy’s pizzerias and several Albert’s Schloss beer halls, with its largest venue situated on Shaftesbury Avenue in London’s West End.
Ellis, now chief executive, maintains that business will continue as usual throughout the sale process. He emphasised the enduring appeal of affordable dining, stating that the group is committed to keeping the price of a margherita pizza below £10 outside London and well below £15 in the capital to ensure value for money in a challenging economic climate.
The sale process follows heightened interest in the UK pizza sector, exemplified by the acquisition of Pizza Pilgrims by private equity group McWin and Fulham Shore’s Franco Manca by Japan’s Toridoll. These moves shape a competitive landscape where the focus shifts increasingly toward affordability and quality.
Mission Mars has demonstrated significant revenue growth, with turnover rising from £71 million to £93 million in the year to late September 2024. Pre-tax profits, however, declined from £5.3 million to £2.5 million over the same period.
The Business Growth Fund, which invested £10 million in Mission Mars seven years ago, will be closely watching the outcome of the sale process. Investors will be keen to see how the group’s ability to combine affordability with rapid expansion translates into buyer interest and long-term prospects.
