Monzo has experienced a significant service disruption that has prevented thousands of customers from accessing core banking functions. The digital bank confirmed it had identified technical issues and activated a backup service to maintain essential operations. Despite these measures, many users reported continued difficulties, with some stating that expected transfers were not appearing in their account balances. One customer on social media expressed frustration over being unable to access early payment options, highlighting the immediate impact on personal finances.

Those attempting to log into the application were met with a notification stating that the bank was experiencing issues and would provide updates once resolved. The scale of the disruption was reflected on Downdetector, which tracks banking outages. The platform recorded a sharp increase in reports around midday, with more than 3,000 users flagging problems with the app. This incident marks the second major outage for the fintech this year, following a previous issue in January that left customers unable to access cash through their accounts.

The wider banking sector has faced persistent reliability challenges recently. Lloyds Banking Group, which includes Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland, recently suffered a technical glitch that caused customers to view other users’ transactions on their mobile apps. A report by the Treasury Committee in March revealed that nine of the UK’s largest banks and building societies experienced over 803 hours of downtime over the preceding two years. This equates to 33 days of total service loss. Barclays recorded the highest number of incidents at 33, though it reduced the total duration to 93 hours. HSBC followed closely with 32 incidents but accumulated nearly double the downtime at 176 hours. A Monzo spokesperson stated the bank was working to resolve the issue quickly and that customers could still perform most tasks, including transfers and card payments, via the backup system.
