Monzo Bank is confronting a period of turbulence as major shareholders express discontent following the resignation of chief executive TS Anil. Several investors, who collectively state that they hold half of the shares in the privately owned digital bank, were taken aback by the announcement of Anil’s departure in October. The management shift has sparked demands for changes at the board level, with rebel investors seeking direct representation.
Currently, only Passion Capital, one of the earliest backers of Monzo, holds a board seat through its co-founder Eileen Burbidge. Some shareholders have identified Seth Pierrepont, a fund manager for Iconiq Capital and former Deliveroo board member, as a suitable candidate for board membership. Monzo is reportedly open to widening shareholder participation at this level, although any changes must meet the approval of financial regulators at the Bank of England.
Diana Layfield, an experienced executive from Google, has been announced as Anil’s successor and will assume the chief executive role in February. Anil explained that Monzo’s ambitions for international growth prompted the company to seek new leadership. Initial plans had considered Layfield for the UK business, but this was superseded by a decision to appoint her to the top role across the group.
While Monzo declined to comment directly, sources close to the matter indicate that the bank continues to engage constructively with its investors. The rebel group has also raised concerns about strategic direction, particularly in relation to a potential stock market listing. There are suggestions that preferences diverge over the choice of London or New York for any future flotation, adding to the tension.
Monzo, valued at £4.5 billion in its most recent fundraising round, currently serves 13 million customers, reports annual revenues of £1.2 billion, and employs approximately 4,000 staff. As the situation develops, the response of Monzo’s board and the outcomes of these internal debates will be watched closely across the financial sector.
