Morrisons Retains Food Manufacturing Amid Financial Pressures

Morrisons, the fifth-largest supermarket chain in Britain, has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining its food manufacturing division despite recent challenges. The statement from Rami Baitiéh, the chief executive, underscores that food manufacturing is integral to the company’s identity.

The supermarket processes approximately a quarter of the fresh food sold in its stores through its Myton Food Group division, which operates around ten manufacturing sites across the UK. This commitment remains crucial as Morrisons navigates a landscape marked by intense competition and rising operational costs.

Concerns grew over the future of this division due to the closure of several facilities, including its bakery in Wakefield and a fruit-packing plant. Following a £6.6 billion debt incurred during its acquisition by Clayton Dubilier & Rice, Morrisons has been taking steps to bolster its financial standing. Reports indicate that net debt has declined by 46 per cent to £3.17 billion since 2022.

Morrisons has implemented a series of cost-cutting measures, including a transition from night to daytime store replenishment and the introduction of digital labels. These steps aim to optimise labour efficiency and improve waste management practices for fresh food.

The supermarket reported a statutory pre-tax loss of £381 million for the year, a slight improvement from the loss of £414 million from the previous year. Sales growth has shown signs of slowing ahead of the Christmas season but did gain momentum during that period, particularly driven by a successful premium dine-in range.

Amid rising inflation and lower consumer confidence, Morrisons has adapted to changing shopping habits, with customers increasingly opting for smaller baskets and own-brand products. Baitiéh highlighted that inflation has a significant impact on less affluent consumers, a demographic that represents a considerable proportion of its customer base.
