News Corporation signs ‘historical’ agreement with OpenAI

News Corporation announced an innovative, multi-year deal to provide news content from their publications to OpenAI. OpenAI is one of the leaders in artificial intelligence.

The multi-media group, which includes The Wall Street Journal and The New York Post, has said that OpenAI is allowed to use content from News Corp titles to answer user questions, and enhance its products.

OpenAI will also have access to an extensive archive of the media group, which dates back to 1785. This partnership does not provide access to any other News Corp businesses.

The deal is the latest one that ChatGPT has made with a media organization, in an effort to provide its technology with reliable news and information without violating copyright. It has already partnered with Axel Springer

Generative AI creates human-like content using prompts. The basis of the technology is a large-language model, which is created using vast amounts of data. The more information that is in the models, then the more sophisticated will be the output.

Creative industries are concerned that their content is being used without permission. The New York Times is suing OpenAI over the use of their intellectual property. Sony Music has become the latest business that accuses AI labs for using artists’ content without permission.

Sam Altman said, “We value News Corp’s history as an industry leader in breaking news reporting around the globe”

Robert Thomson, chief executive officer of News Corp told Fox Business that the deal will have profound implications for journalism, both now and in future. He said that, “apart from artificial intelligent, which will impact everyone, you also need real intelligence. That’s why these partnership are so important.”

Thomson wrote in a memo sent to its staff: “The agreement acknowledges the premium that premium journalism commands. In the digital age, distributors have dominated, sometimes at the expense creators. Many media companies were swept aside by an unrelenting technological tide. It is our responsibility to take advantage of this opportunity.”

Thomson stated in a statement: “We are confident that a historic agreement will establish new standards of veracity, virtue, and value for the digital age.

We are thrilled to have found principled, trustworthy partners in Sam Altman. They and their talented team understand the social and commercial importance of journalists and journalism. This historic agreement is not the end of our friendship, but rather the beginning. We are committed to creating and delivering insights and integrity instantly.

Altman stated: “Our partnership is a proud moment in journalism and technology. News Corp has a long history of being a leader when it comes to breaking news worldwide. We are thrilled to be able to offer our users access to their high-quality reporting. Together, we’re laying the foundations for a world where AI respects, enhances, and upholds standards of world-class reporting.
