A proposed megafarm in Norfolk that aimed to rear 870,000 chickens and 14,000 pigs at a time has been unanimously rejected by local councillors due to environmental concerns. The application, submitted by Cranswick plc, would have established one of the largest industrial poultry and pig units in Europe.
The decision was driven by overwhelming public opposition, with over 12,000 objections filed and a petition signed by 42,000 individuals. This resistance came from various stakeholders including local campaign groups, environmental NGOs such as WWF and Sustain, as well as local political representatives.
Labour MP Terry Jermy highlighted that the intensive farming operation would jeopardise jobs at existing local farms and businesses, notably vegetarian food producer Quorn, which operates nearby. Concerns regarding the farm’s carbon footprint were also raised, with estimates suggesting it could produce around 50,000 tonnes of CO2 annually, exceeding one million tonnes over a 20-year period.
Cranswick sought to expand an existing site to meet growing market demands while promoting higher welfare standards. However, planning officers cited failures in demonstrating that the development would not significantly adversely affect protected environmental sites. Their comprehensive report noted insufficient environmental information and raised concerns over air pollution and water depletion in the region.
The Environmental Law Foundation highlighted that the operation would require more water than permitted by its abstraction licence, further complicating the proposal. Cranswick contended that the site would bolster food security by decreasing reliance on imported meats, with 96% of production intended for British consumers.
Despite the company’s claims of job creation and reduced carbon emissions, the council determined it would be unlawful to approve the application given the overarching environmental risks identified.
