The chief executive of Nvidia has stressed that artificial intelligence will generate jobs, countering concerns about potential job losses due to automation. Jensen Huang argues that AI represents essential infrastructure, akin to electricity and the internet, necessitating significant investment to establish.

Huang mentioned that the labour required to develop AI infrastructure is extensive, with factories needing skilled workers such as electricians, pipe-fitters, steelworkers, network technicians, installers and operators. He argued that these roles are well-paid and in short supply, indicating that a PhD in computer science is not necessary to be part of this transformation.

Addressing fears regarding job displacement, Huang drew attention to the increasing demand for radiologists since AI began assisting in the reading of medical scans. He explained that while AI handles routine tasks, radiologists can concentrate on judgment, communication and patient care, leading to increased hospital productivity and employment opportunities.

Despite warnings from AI industry leaders about potential workplace disruption, Huang’s perspective offers a counter-narrative. He believes that AI will create new employment opportunities, particularly in technical and analytical fields. This viewpoint is supported by a recent study indicating a rise in demand for such roles after the launch of ChatGPT.

Analysts predict that AI could automate tasks equivalent to 25 per cent of all work hours in the US. While this may result in some job displacement, experts expect AI-driven labour productivity enhancements to propel job creation in various sectors. Historical trends indicate that technological advancements typically lead to the emergence of new occupations, highlighting the dynamic nature of the job market.

As the conversation around AI’s impact on employment continues, it is crucial to consider the balance between displacement and the creation of new roles. The investment in AI infrastructure and the skills required to adapt to these changes may ultimately dictate the future landscape of the workforce.
