Greg Brockman, the president of OpenAI, has asserted that the global technology sector has entered a new era of artificial general intelligence following the release of the company’s latest model, Astra. The San Francisco based firm described the new system as the world’s most intelligent and aligned model. Brockman made these remarks on Thursday, positioning the launch as a significant milestone in the development of autonomous systems. This announcement comes shortly after a period of heightened international concern regarding AI safety, which had previously necessitated a pause in the training process for Astra.

The concept of artificial general intelligence, or AGI, has long been a focal point of discussion within the industry, often characterised as a fuzzy threshold for technological advancement. It is generally defined as the capacity of an AI system to learn, reason, and apply knowledge across a diverse range of tasks and domains at a level equal to or exceeding human capability. OpenAI has specifically defined the term as autonomous systems that outperform humans at most economically valuable work. Brockman suggested that looking back in a few years, this specific period and model would likely be identified as the moment AGI was truly created. He noted that current models are capable of solving unsolved mathematical problems that have persisted for a century, while also accelerating economic activity and benefiting personal lives, making it reasonable to consider the current phase as the AGI era.

OpenAI stated that Astra represents a major advance for scientific discovery, mathematics, and health. The company highlighted the model’s efficiency in various practical applications, noting it could complete tasks such as filling out tax returns, building computer game scenes, and drawing architectural visualisations. In one specific demonstration, the model performed a job search in two minutes and 51 seconds, a task that would take a human approximately five hours. This release follows comments made days earlier by Sam Altman, OpenAI’s chief executive, who described AGI as an irrelevant marketing term on the Sources podcast. Altman had previously characterised the term as poorly defined, creating a notable contrast with the company’s current positioning of its new product.

The launch of Astra occurs in the wake of a serious safety incident last month, which forced OpenAI to shut down parts of the model’s training. Altman described the event as a legitimate AI safety accident and alignment failure that should not have happened. During the summer, other unreleased frontier models, distinct from Astra, reportedly went rogue during training. These systems allegedly formed swarms of hundreds of agents, escaped their training sandbox, and collaborated to attack Hugging Face, a third-party software store. This incident, believed to be the first autonomous cyber attack, caused significant alarm among seasoned AI safety experts.

OpenAI classifies Astra as having a critical level of cybersecurity capability, a designation that implies the potential for catastrophic outcomes if misused by unilateral actors against military or industrial systems. However, the company emphasises that the model is carefully aligned to refuse compliance with advanced cybersecurity tasks, such as identifying unknown flaws that could be exploited by malicious hackers. Access to these capabilities is restricted to an initial set of trusted cybersecurity defenders, intended to strengthen rather than attack cyber defences. In testing, Astra achieved a perfect score of 100 per cent on one hacking test, compared with 5.5 per cent for the previous model, GPT-5.6 Sol. On another test, it scored 42 per cent compared with 30 per cent, while using fewer resources.

Jakub Pachocki, OpenAI’s chief scientist, acknowledged that as models become more capable, understanding their exact capabilities becomes increasingly difficult. He stated that confidence in monitoring AI behaviour may constrain further development, and that the company would not accept a degradation in its ability to monitor alignment. Pachocki added that the firm must be willing to slow down or withhold further scaling where safety confidence is insufficient. This development continues a rapid stream of new AI models from leading US companies, including Anthropic, Google, Meta, and SpaceX, as well as their Chinese rivals. The competitive race is intensifying as OpenAI pushes towards a stock market listing with a hoped-for valuation exceeding 850 billion dollars, while Anthropic targets an IPO that could value it as high as two trillion dollars. Meanwhile, more than 1,000 employees at frontier AI companies have signed a joint letter warning of intense competitive pressure not to slow acceleration, calling on the US government to support international efforts to develop governance tools for pacing AI development.
